World Music Facts

Welcome to World Music Facts! World music is a term that means folk music that represents the many countries around the world. Each country's music is played on native instruments and has their own songs with lyrics frequently in their own language.

Folk Song Lyrics are about the history or just the normal life in that country. In many countries there are work songs. The work songs are songs that the people composed while they were working. World and Folk Musicians are people who perform either in a band or solo. They perform mostly on the national instruments.

World Music

  • Aboriginal Music - Originated in Australia by the Aborigines. The national intstrument of the Australian Aborigines is the Didgeridoo.
  • African Music - African Music can be broken into four regions. Besides voice many other percussive instruments are used.
  • African American Music - African American Music is the music that was played by the Africans that came to America. The Banjo is a popular African American Instrument.
  • American Music
  • Appalachian Folk Music - Appalachian music originated in the region of the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern United States. It is based on the music from England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland that the immagrants to that region brought with them. Typical instruments are the Banjo, Fiddle, Fretted Dulcimer and the Guitar.
  • Asian Music
  • Australian Music - Australian Music is made up of a mix of Aboriginal music and Anglo-Celtic Music.
  • Bluegrass Music - Its roots are a mix of Scottish, English, Welsh, Irish and African-American Music. Bluegrass is played by a group of musicians playing the Mandolin, Acoustic Guitar, Banjo, Fiddle, and the Upright Bass.
  • Brazilian Music
  • Cape Breton Music - Cape Breton music is based on Scottish Music and is played primarily by the Fiddle, Bagpipe, Piano and Guitar.
  • Celtic Music - Celtic Music means the music that is played by the celtic people or music that has qualities that are the same as celtic music. Instruments played in Celtic Music are the: Bodhran, Flute, Penny Whistle (Tin Whistle), Fiddle, Guitar, Bouzouki, Accordian, Hammered Dulcimer, Harp, Pipe and many other instruments.
  • Chinese Music - Chinese Music is the Music that comes from China. Chinese music is played either solo or in an orchestra without a conductor. Chinese instruments are grouped into eight categories of what they are made of: silk, bamboo, wood, stone, metal, clay, gourd and hide.

  • Hawaiian Music - Hawaiian Music is largely made up of chanting and dance music.
  • Hungarian Music
  • Irish Music - Irish Music is music that of a similar genre to the music of Ireland. The instruments played in Irish music are the fiddle, flute, whistle, Uilleann Pipes, Harp, Accordian, Concertina, Banjo, Guitar, Bouzouki and the Bodhran.
